Personalized Medicine in Nevada Center of Biomedical Research Excellence

Martin R. Schiller, Nora Caberoy, JIngchun Chen, Xianging Chen, Mira Han, Joseph Lombardo, Michael Nasiak, Edwin Oh, Shirley Shen, Qing Wu, and Xiaogang Wu

Our COBRE program in the 2018 cohort is building a sustained interdisciplinary center in personalized medicine. The new center of excellence will create an environment that cultivates the career development of new investigators, establishes new research core infrastructure, and increases our understanding of personalized medicine. We will foster new investigator independence and collaborations, and develop new research cores in Human Genome Data Algorithms to Analytics (HuGe DAtA) and Genome Analysis and Sequencing Pipeline (GASP). These cores will support new investigator projects: 1) identifying the tissue of origin for cancers of unknown primaries by multi-omics profiling; 2) Increase the accuracy of osteoporosis diagnosis by using individualized clinical reference ranges based on individual genetic makeup and environment, and 3) assessing the functional role of microglia and immune system dysfunction in schizophrenia etiology. The new investigator pipeline will be primed by a seed grant program to stimulate investigator interactions and use of the research cores.
